TMHSWP: Making Revision Choices

DID IT!

:happysnoopydance:

Wow. What a project. What great stories. What a great accomplishment!

Yes, the big revision pass is done! The story went to just above 100k, which is where I estimated it would come out after revision (first draft was about 94k).

I finished the pass early enough in the day that I was then able to start going through the revision notes to make sure I included everything. Well, everything I still agreed with.

That’s an important note, and one that illustrates the choices every writer must make when it comes to the revision process.

When I finished the first draft, and the weeks after, I made all sort of notes on things to change and rearrange. For some parts of the story, I figured it was going to be hard to revise it. Some of it I wasn’t looking forward to.

While in the process of the actual revision, I decided I didn’t agree with a bunch of those suggestions. I liked the first draft version. It went with the story, it progressed logically, it made sense for the characters. So, some of those revision notes were crossed out without any of it going in the story.

Meanwhile, I did find a few notes that I didn’t take care of in the first pass. Little things. Nothing that meant I needed to make big changes. I zipped through those changes, and they added a little over 1000 words to the story.

By the end, the book ended up as a nice tidy story. Not only in itself, but bringing together the threads through the other books. Answering those last few questions.

I have one more checklist to go through for the entire series. Once that is finished, though, the entire series will be done!

So, onwards to that final checklist! Then need to put this book through the final technical check (spelling, grammar, a few pet problems). Oh yeah, we’re getting close here!

TMHSWP: Revising With Nano On the Horizon

The move is over, and it’s time to get back to revision!

I’m nearing the finish line in the big revision pass. Good thing, considering the NaNoWriMo season officially starts this coming week. On Tuesday, October 1st, the site is due to be reset. Then the insanity of the new Nano season shall commence!

BWAHAHAHA!

Ahem

But, first, to get the revision done. Then I can concentrate on the Nano stuff. Easy to say, but hard to do. The brain keeps wanting to switch to the Nano projects and get them into shape. I also have a Nano workshop starting at Forward Motion Writers this coming Friday (a free planning class).

Wait. Revision first. Then Nano. Right…

Last night’s revision did take a little more work. I had to change how something worked, as it wasn’t consistent with what I had set up in previous books. Which meant a lot of deleting and rewording. However, I did not have to write or rewrite entire scene like I thought I might. Thank goodness.

The book is really closing in on the end of the entire saga. I’m liking how I tied up some of the threads, some in ways I don’t recall having done.

Yay!

TMHSWP: Great Day of Revision

Oh yeah. A great night of revision!

Helped by the story starting to hit the grand climax. Hard for it not to speed forward. I’m also seeing the end of the novel, which also means the near end of the big revision pass!

The revision is on track to get done earlier than planned. That would be great considering we are heading very fast into the 2013 Nano season. While I know what projects I will be writing in November, they need a lot of work before November 1st. With the revision out of the way, I’ll be able to concentrate on that instead. Yeah, that would be nice!

Although, I know I’ll miss spending time with the String Weavers. I like the characters. There are so many adventures that happen in the books, and so much more that could happen. Who knows. I might revisit them in the future. 😀

TMHSWP: Back to Revision… And Worry

We’re getting ready for a little move, so a lot of things have been put aside this week. Combine it with work coming from other sources, and the revision got pushed aside a couple days.

It felt good to get back to it.

A lot of stuff happened in the 5400 words of revision in this session. Most of it didn’t need revision, either. It’s always nice to have parts like that. 😀

We now have the appointment for Mother Hen’s MRI. It happens next week, and yes, she is stressing over it. We all are. It’s stressful going into the tests, not knowing if after the appointment if we will still have our winter life, or if it all blows up with a reoccurrence of the cancer growing.

All happy thoughts appreciated for the next week or so. 🙂

Hugs to everyone!

TMHSWP: Return of the Covers!

Another great night of revising. Even with all the allergies and fatigue, I seem to get a second wind right around midnight.

The good part about that is all the revision I’m getting in. The bad part is that it tends to make me stay awake really late, and then I REALLY sleep in. Eh, so long as I’m productive, right? 😛

Some of you may have noticed a few updates on the blog. I’ve been doing them little by little. The first was the return of the recent releases on the right-hand bar of the site (Including the release of book 7 of the Salmon Run series, “Breakup – Alaska Style”). Instead of listing several of them, each taking up space in the sidebar, I chose to go with a rotating image with links. I think it uses space more efficiently. 🙂

There’s something else that is new here, but I’ll write about it in a different post. 😀
