TMHSWP: Light At the End Of the Tunnel

Finally had a day where I felt I could concentrate. Wow, did it feel good.

Not only did I get to a good part in the nove, but it also didn’t need as much revision as I remember from writing the first draft. Just goes to show that a first instinct about a first draft isn’t always correct.

The story is also hitting big at the climax, which always makes it so much fun. The creative-brain wants to stay focused, just to see the big payoff happen.

The big first-pass revision pass is now almost over. One more day, possibly two, and then I will be left with the spell-check and other small technical things to go through. I see the light at the end of the tunnel!

TMHSWP: Faulty Story Memory

A very good day of revision yesterday

The story is really flowing along, a lot of conflicts, a nice cliffhanger before the POV switched to a different character. Yep, definitely happy with the book!

It’s interesting how my perception of come scenes are different from when I read through the first draft now. Last night I worked through three scenes that I remember when writing the first draft as “in need of a lot of work.” I thought them disjointed, needing a lot of work on the dialogue, pacing, and flow. That the characters were wooden.

Then I started working on those three scenes last night, and realized my memory of those passages were completely wrong.

Those scenes didn’t need a lot of work. Far from it. I added in my usual extra description, setting, and emotion (I’m a lean first draft writer, and those are items I typically put in during revision. I’m definitely a putter-inner!), and then they were done. I’m happy with the direction they went and what they added to the story. The things I thought the scenes were missing, including a big answer to a question and a set-up for book 7, they actually included.

Go figure.

Other scenes, though? The ones I don’t have any definite memory about? Some of those needed work. One I had to rewrite the beginning of.

Odd the tricks our memory can play on us.

TMHSWP: Past the Block

The below revision words were not done all in one day. Instead, that is the total for the three days this past week that I was able to get to revision.

This includes a difficult part that stopped me for three days. I had to think about the revision note I left for myself. This resulted in doing a lot of art in the meantime, as well as walking around the neighborhood. Thinking and ruminating as I did both. Sometimes doing other things helps to clear the blockage.

In the end, I decided to do a modified version I had suggested in the note and the bit of a scene written in the first draft. It resulted in over a thousand new words and two small conversations added. I’m happy with it, and now that I’m past the problem area, the revision is moving forward again.

For the rest of the days this week? I’ve been putting a few words every day on the current writing project, but mostly I’ve been taking care of Mother Hen (she’s needed extra help this past week), dealing with fatigue, and doing art when my mind wasn’t up to doing anything else.

Lots and lots of art! Nice spacescapes, but with no stories to them. Yet. 😛

TMHSWP: In the Middles, and Loving It

I took Friday off from revision. That didn’t mean I didn’t do other writing stuff, though! Between taking care of Mother Hen, I’ve been getting a lot of things done.

On Friday I was back to it. 1600 new words on the novelette-turned-novella thingie, and it’s done! Now I need to get the next story outline out so I can have something to write new words on.

Redid a cover for one of my older releases. When I get the time, I’ll get that out.

And then, of course, the revision. Managed to revise 4800 words worth on the next String Weaver book. The session consisted of a few nice action-packed scenes that were fun to revisit. Deep in the middle, and dramatic things are afoot!

With all thesse new words, there are projects now lined up for revision. While I’m enjoying the String Weavers, I’m anxious to get to the other revision projects. Funny how that works.

Now, if only the ant invasion inside the house will let up so I can get more done. Sigh.
